A short history of Senior Soccer

A favorite tale told by some men to their charming wives over a several decades is that they expect to just keep playing Soccer for a just a few more years,! Some wives started as Soccer mums, but their hubbies keep playing into their 30’s and so their kids leave home, and they became Soccer wives! Later as the spouses aged, the wives became Soccer grandmas! Then, heaven forbid, some became, Soccer Great Grandmas! Old Soccer players never die! Not satisfied with an almost lifetime of Soccer the men like to boast that when they get old they will take up tennis, and when they are “really old” they will take up golf. Problem is that there are a bunch of soccer playing 70 year olds, and 2 players ready to reach 80 this year. It looks like they will be  “swinging their sticks and rackets” from a wheelchair! Somehow, someway however, the ladies manage to come out on top! First they get to vote, then learn how to drive, and so “women’s lib” was in full swing! The American Ladies won the World Cup, something American males rarely mention!  And now, this year for the first time, there are more Senior Ladies signed up to play than Senior Men! Dust off your boots men, its time to fight back!

Players must be over 50 by December 31 2009, and all players sign up as individuals for the $45 fee, which includes 3 days of Soccer. If you cannot play on the Friday, no problem, as that is a separate tournament, but the fee is still $45. Players are placed on teams by age and country or region of birth. Sometimes we allow pre arranged teams to play, especially on the Friday, so call Mike Mackenzie at 661 809 1654 for details. Fields have been booked from 9 to 5 Friday, 8.30 to 4.30 Saturday and Sunday and schedules will be adjusted, where possible, to accommodate players coming in from out of town. Location is Hourglass Park, Black Mountain Road, San Diego 92126. Sign up forms are available at www.sdseniorgames.org but fax a copy to Mike at 661 861 9307 so teams can be prearranged.

On the Thursday before the Soccer games, the Soccer players have a Golf tournament, but this year the golf is open to all Olympians who are participating in another Sport like Soccer. Therefore Tom Watson, for example, would have to let us have the opportunity to laugh at him before he whacks us on the links!

As with the Soccer, golf teams will be made up based upon country of birth, so we will have our own Ryder Cup event. American foursomes will be further broken up by what State, or region of U.S.A., they were born in. 18 holes, including cart, is only $36 and lunch is provide for an extra $4. Play is at the beautiful Eastlake Country Club in Chula Vista and the super special price includes cart and range balls. Web site is www.eastlakeamericangolf.com for directions etc.
